e-Seal Electronic Seal Active Tag Lock for cargo container security

May 10th, 2011 No comments

e-Seal is an advance electronic container seal replacing conventional bolt-seal. The basic function of  an e-Seal is the same as traditional seal. However, it can be sealed and unsealed for many times during the whole process. Typically it can be used in container transportation to keep record of each operation of seal and unseal and improve logistic safety level.

We have disassembled an active e-Seal used in container tagging and monitoring. This e-seal tag is based on proprietary 2.4GHz air protocol.

Remote Speed Control Ceiling Fan Arcing Sound Repair DIY

April 12th, 2011 11 comments

One of my ceiling fan with electronic remote speed control produces an arcing.. bishhhhhh….bishhhhhh… sound (like an electric shock sound) and it switches the fan speed from low to medium to high, and its like out of control. I have decided to inspect to see what is wrong with the electronics section. I have disassembled the bottom base control section away from the body of the fan motor.

Figure 1: Bottom base control section internal (PCB is sitting inside the fan bottom enclosure so as the IR (Infra Red) receiver is mounted on the bottom of the Light Filter lense.

RFID (EM-Marine/MIFARE) Door Access Controller

March 18th, 2011 No comments

Product Brief Description

This is a standalone RFID door access controller which supports many available RFID tags in the market. Currently it comes with two version. One supports Mifare type-A tags (ISO-14443A) which are frequenly used as high security tags which stores important information like personal information and cash credit details. In Malaysia, it is embedded inside the new MyKad (Identity Card) to be used as Touch-N-Go Toll pre-paid card.

Fig 1: Left: Malaysia’s Identity Card (MyKad) with Touch-N-Go facility, Right: Standard Mifare Card

The other type is EM-Marine which reads EM4100 tags. They are very commonly used as door access cards. It only keeps the unique ID inside the card. The firmware is implemented on an 8-bit PIC microcontroller and is writen using CCS PIC C compiler.

Pulse and toggle output type are implemented here so that application is not limited to just open a door. With toggle mode, one can use it as a car immobilizer, or perhaps as a public toggle on-off lamp switch. With the OUT connection configurable to Vin or GND, one can also use it as an ARM/DISARM switch for a Home alarm system. Hence, the design of the application is not limited or function specific.

LM380 Mono Power Amplifier

March 18th, 2011 6 comments

Features

Mono Power Amplifier with 2.5W-8W output @ 4 ohms
Wide supply voltage from 10V to 22V
Robust construction
General purpose use
Low Cost IC
Low external component count & compact size

Design Objectives

To design a simple and robust power amplifier (mono) system to test pre-amps (a useful tool for designing preamps) or for general purpose usage. I have used it to design a surround-sound decoder which involves a subtracting and summing amplifier configuration to produce the respective rear channel and center/subwoofer channel signals. This amplifier is handy to test and verify each of the stages.

System Operation & Description

A LM380N ‘N’ version with 14 pins are selected because they can dissipate heat well (8.3W) thru their ground pins. Therefore, a heat sink is not required in the design. This further reduce cost and complexity of construction.

Stereo 60W+60W RMS Power Amplifier System

March 10th, 2011 10 comments

Features

  • 60W per channel into 8 ohms load at less than 0.5% THD+N from 20Hz-20KHz
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio >= 97dB
  • Quiet fade-in/out mute mode
  • Click and Pop suppression
  • SPiKe protection
  • Compact Stereo

Design Objectives

The idea is to design a compact power amplifier system. The design should be simple and cost effective while maintaining the sound quality at optimal performance. It should be built modular so that the same PCBs can be simply cascaded to provide additonal 4, 6 or more output channels. The selection of the components to be integrated into the final design are carefully picked to maintain the THD+N performance.

System Operation & Description

The LM4780 power stereo amplifier is configured as a non-inverting amplifier which has to a gain of 20V/V which is high enough to maintain stability and not too high untill increasing the noise and THD+N performance. The input is taken from the RCA jack which then feed to two high quality 1uF metallized polyester film capacifor with 100V rating. The power output socket provides easy push-release terminals for speaker cable connections (see snap-shots picture below).
